No water for rapids
IN.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, February 8. The diversion of water twice a day through the Aratiatia Rapids, a popular tourist attraction, will be stopped on Monday until further notice because of the electricity crisis. ! The water will be used for power generation at the Aratiatia power station, eight miles below Lake Taupo. Last winter, similar action was taken. This added about 500,000 units a week to the national grid. The New Zealand Electricity Department’s system control supervisor at Whakamaru (Mr R. Pook) said yesterday that the level of Lake Taupo was still dropping. It was 1173.10 ft yesterday afternoon. According to the New Zealand Electricity Department district manager in Hamilton, (Mr W. J. Shanks), the lake level should be 1176 ft at present. At the end of January! last year, it was 1175.65 ft. | Some boats are having difficulty leaving their moorings in the Taupo boat harbour, and boat owners have been clearing weed from the bed of the lake to make the passage easier.
