Small cattle feedlot being set up
A small cattle feedlot with a capacity of 800 head is being established in Mid-Canter-bury by a consortium consisting of Fletcher Holdings. Ltd, the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd, Thomas Borthwick and Sons (A’Asia), Ltd. and the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd.
Mr J. J. Drayton, the chair- i man of the management] committee for the project,] said yesterday that the] object of the feedlot was to determine whether large-] scale feedlotting in New Zealand would be economic. Questions such as whether grain-fed chilled New Zealand beef could command a i premium on the Japanese and other markets, and what' [were the difficulties of shipping and processing require[ments could, the committee: (felt, only be resolved by practical experience. At present, it was intended that the feedlot would be run for two to three years. After this, a full evaluation of the economics of feedlotting would be made. ; The consortium has retained an American con-!
| suitant to advise on such matters as feedlot design, 'food rations, feed processing, ; and general management.
