Buoyant sale for Romneys
GORE. Romney stud rams met a buoyant market at the seventeenth southern provinces fair at Gore.
The sale average of SI 157 was second only to that achieved in the boom year of 1966. when it
was 812/9. The lop price for an individual ram was $9500. The big bench of buyers, many from the North Island, put a premium on the top sheep of well-established breed lines, but rams of lesser quality or from studs lacking reputation were practically ignored. Of 210 Shearling Romneys offered. 109 were sold at prices ranging from $250 to $9500. and 101 were passed in. The day's realisation from ring sales was $126,150. Last year 101 rams sold for $99,350, an average of $984. and the top price was $5OOO. The fair was most successful for 11. T. Brenssell. of Moa Flat, selling Fernvale sheep on his own account for the first time since the dissolution of the partnership of J. N. Brenssell and Sons. Nine Fernvale sires were sold for $25,050. giving the top average of the day at $2787. The stud’s top sale was at $9OOO. One of its rams was sold for $5300 to I. R. Oakley and J. IV. Gregory. Ashburton. Top price honours w’ent to the Waikoikoi partnership of D. H. Robertson and Sons, who sold 18 Merrydowns sheep without reserve for $37,250. The top-priced lot at $9500 was bought by A. J. Steadman and Son. Taihape. The Wyndham partnership of J. E. Mitchell and Son sold one of its Eden Bank sires at $4250 to K. C. Burrows. Culverden, and A. Campbell. Blenheim. The Eden Bank average was $1963.
