Big bridge job

AUCKLAND. . Tenders for one of the biggest bridge jobs in the coun-i | try—the four-lane first stage |of the new Mangere bridge—were called on Wednesday by I the Minister of Works (Mr Watt). The job is estimated to be worth Ssm. I The bridge will replace a [6O-year-old structure and will [carry both motorway and I local traffic between Oneihunga and Mangere. Suspended from the structure will be a separate level for -pedestrians and cyclists. The Minister said the first stage would be completed by Hate 1977. Later it would be 'duplicated to make the full [crossing. > The bridge is the first major [structure in New Zealand to i be designed in metrics: it will be 644 m (2112 ft long and 121.9 m (72ft) wide. j The Sim foundations now i under construction reach as i far as 100 ft below the harIbour bottom to solid rock , and have been tested to withstand loads of 60 tons a [square foot.
