A Royal occasion...

The “Horse of the Year” show will be a Royal occasion with Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips attending the three day event on the last day, this Sunday. Princess Anne will present the trophies to the winners of the Wills “Horse of the Year” and the “Pony of the Year” jumping championships, while Captain Phillips will place the victors’ garlands on the champion horses.

Princess Anne and Captain Phillips will be setting out for Rangiora from the Royal yacht at 10.30 a.m. and are expected to reach the Rangiora Showgrounds at about 11.20 a.m., after travelling through the town by way of Percival, High, and Ashley streets. Princess Anne and Captain Phillips are scheduled to leave Rangiora at 4.20 p.m. for the Christchurch International Airport, to fly to Wellington. Princess Anne and Captain Phillips will be driven around the jumping arena accompanied by the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr J. A. McKenzie) and Mrs McKenzie, and the chairman of the Rangiora County Council (Mr D.

Ensor) and Mrs Ensor, and officials of the New Zealand Horse Society before going to the Royal luncheon at the showgrounds. Guests to the luncheon will include the Minister of Tourism (Mrs Tirikatene-Sullivan) and Mr Sullivan, the member of Parliament for the district (Mr T. K. Burke) and Mrs Burke, the president of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr L. H. Power) and Mrs Power. Everyone should have ample opportunity to see Princess Anne, who with Captain Phillips, is expected to inspect the course for the “Horse of the Year” championship after the luncheon. The A. and P. Association has made the whole of its ground available to cater for the influx of cars for the occasion and it is expected that off-street parking will be available within the grounds

for about 6000 vehicles. “I am confident that this will be a memorable occasion for all show patrons and residents of Rangiora and the surrounding districts, and I trust a very happy event for our Royal visitors,” said the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr McKenzie) yesterday.
