Jamaica’s big hope
Xavier Mirander, who last evening rode his way to the final of the Games sprint cycling, is stationed at an air force base in California. Aged 23, he was last year voted the best all-round track rider in California.
He began cycling at the age of 16 and within 12 months had won all four national titles in Jamaica. He is the Jamaican champion in the sprint, the kilometer, the 10 mile, the pursuit, and the road event. In Mirander, Jamaica has the opportunity to win its first cycling gold at a Commonwealth Games.
Asked what he thought of his prospects for the final, Mirander said: “I won’t say, but I’ll try as hard as I can.”
