Playing for bronze

New Zealand will be fighting for its first Gaines badminton medal today. The national mixed doubles champions, Richard Purser and Mrs Alison Branfield, will meet Elliott Stuart and Mrs Sue Whetnall, of England, in the play-off for the bronze tnedal this evening.

Purser and Branfield were the surprise of the mixed doubles, and stopped an England dominance by beating Michael Tredgett and Miss Margaret Boxall in the second round yesterday.

Then, half an hour later, the unseeded New Zealand pair caused an upset by beating the No. 4 seeds, Fraser Gow and Mrs Christine Stewart, in the quarter-finals. It was a fine effort, Purser and Mrs Branfield becoming the first New Zealanders to reach the semi-finals stage in a Games badminton tournament.

The No. 2 seeds, Derek Talbot and Mrs Gillian Gilks had two many guns for the New Zealanders in the semi-finals and won, 15-1, 15-12. This evening. Purser and Mrs Branfield will meet the other • beaten semi-finalist, Paul Whetnal! and Miss Nora Gardner in a play-off for the bronze.
