Ugandan to stay with sick wife
John Akii-Bua, the world’s fastest hurdler over 400 metres, and a member of an African family of 43, has withdrawn from the Ugandan Games team to stay at the bedside of his sick wife.
The 25-year-old police! superintendent, gold medal' winner at the Munich Olympics, has told the Ugandan team manager (Mr Poly Kakoza) that he will not be following the Ugandans to Christchurch. His decision not to come to Christchurch, where he was favourite for a gold medal in his specialist event, was made after receiving a medical report on his wife. Details of his wife’s illness have not been revealed.
