Three mares dominate Breeders’ Stakes

Van Glory, (jay Rose, and Marie Gibbins, three of the most tightly assessed mares in the field, should dispute the finish to the New Zealand Standardised Breeders’ Stakes. This race for mares and fillies is one of the feature races at the Canterbury Park I'rotting (>kib's Commonwealth Games meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening.

The Standard bred Breeders’ Stakes will be the second lej> of the main double. The first, the Canterbury Park Free-for-all, will provide another thrilling’ encounter between Robalan and Arapaho, this time over one mile.

' Van Glory and Robalan are : 1 stablemates, and their trainer- :■ driver, D. D. Nyhan, will pro’ivide a short-priced favourite for both on--1 course and off-course betters. Van Glory has a strong '’form background for the '’Stakes. She won at Alexandra IjPark on December 29 and last Friday looked rather unlucky .’when second to Dwayne. She i: received a poor run, and ■ I came from towards the tail jof the field in most deter‘l

mined style for her placing. If she can take full advan-! tage of her favourable barrier draw, she should be, ’too good for most in the race. I Gay Rose will start from 1 No. 1 in the. second line and' ’should be a great prospect.) She was not at ease on the! right-handed track at Alex-! andra Park, according to her; ■ trainer, J. W. Smolenski, and 'failed to reproduce the out-; standing form she has shown; ;in Canterbury. N.I. MARE , Smolenski will have a : worthy second representative in Golden Guest, a versa-; itile mare by Garrison Han-’ over. She was a sound fifth jn her race last Friday after) failing to secure a dear run.! She should run out a sizzling mile. 1 Marie Gibbins is the lone; I North Island mare in the; 'race and presents a problem. ’She was one of the favourites for this race 12 months, ;ago, but failed to begin ’cleanly. Afterwards, she; I showed an amazing turn of (speed. She has shown mixed form this season. She was considered unlucky when second Ito Young Cardigan two starts (ago. but was disappointing at Cambridge in the mile race won by Arapaho. She made much of the pace in that race, i

but dropped right away to jfinish a distant ninth. This ’field will not be such a diffi-' icult assignment, but for all that she will have to improve! on her Cambridge run. SCOTTISH CHARM Scottish Charm, the only; open-class mare in the field.) is better known as a stayer than a sprinter. Even so, she! could show to advantage in; this field when the class is I not quite as rich as when she; 'has opposed Robalan, Arapaho, and company. ' Loyal Drift and Star Guest, too, should run out the mile .fast enough to keep close toi the leaders, and should add interest to the. finish.
