Derby candidates at Tauranga

“The Press” Spc, ini Service AUCKLAND Some of the leading North Island candidates for the 516,000 Great Northern Pacing Derby early next month, and a strong array of four-year-old talent, will ensure a stern battle in the Tudor Hanover Stakes, first leg of the T.A.B double at the Bay of Plenty' Trotting Club's meeting at Tauranga tomorrow. Notable among the three-year-olds engaged are Joslas, Captain Harcourt. Scotty Grattan, and Captain’s Pride. The four-year-olds include Scottish Foil. Sway Boy. Lordy Boy, and Naval Prince. Wairaka On is fancied for the Racing Club Free-for-all. second leg of the T.A.B. concession double. He has been racing consistent!' and is a smart sprinter. His main opposition may come from Big Chase and Good Sport. 2.55 p.m.— (T.A.B double closes 1.25 p.m.) (T.A.B. closes 1.45 p m.) TUDOR HANOVER STAKES, $4OOO, three and four-year-olds; 2400 m. 1 4691 WHITE DEVON (1) It. Had impressive win at Alexandra Park on December 29. This is harder but should go yvell. I. Behrns 2 69 MISTER SHORTHORN (2) It. Form this season has been disappointing. Finished well back at Claudelands on Tuesday. H. Purdon 3 101 SCOTTY GRATTAN (3) It. Won at Tauranga in November when having first start and scored impressively at Rotorua on December 31. Looks one of best prospects. 4 943 ARMBRO MAGIC (4) It. Has plenty of ability but not reliable from standing start. J. Langdon 5 6211 JOSIAS (5) It. Looked well above average when dual winner at Cambridge earlier in month. With safe getaway will be tough to beat. J. Butcher 6 4270 RED SUMMER (1) 10. Latest form not impressive. Win would come as major surprise. J. Cole 7 8061 CAPTAIN'S PRIDE (21 10. Won stylishly at Cambridge on January 8 and good second to David Garrison at Claudelands on Tuesday. Splendid chance with good getaway. 8 6210 DUSKY JUNIOR (3) 10. Won at Claudelands in December but lost chance ■ through breaking at Alexandra Park in December. Promising but hard to fancy here. 9 6595 COUNT BRYDON (1) 20. No appeal on latest form. G. Newberry 10 4416 NAVAL PRINCE (1) 30. I Won on course in November and also two starts back at Alexandra Park on December 29. Sound chance. 7a 2114 CAPTAIN HARCOURT (2) 30. Was fourth at Alexandra Park on December 22, but over-all form this season very good. Must have great I chance.

4a 9251 SCOTTISH FOIL (1) 40. Returned to top form with bold win at Claudelands on Tuesday. Even from this mark will be tough. C. Hunter 113 0045 SWAY BOY (21 40. Had string of wins early in season but form lately only fair. D. Gibbons 12 2365 LORDY BOY (3) 40. Useful effort at Claudelands on Tuesday but makes little appeal from this mark. A. Holmes 11 6236 JOHN ROBERT (4) 40. Finished well back at Claudelands on Tuesday after early break. Speedy but on difficult mark. Brackets: Armbro Magic and Scottish Foil: Captain's Pride and Captain Harcourt. Timmins 3 7621 JACK ROBINSON (3) It. Won in fast time at Cambridge on January 8. Regarded more as stayer than sprinter but has drawn well. M Robinson 4 5600 PAULA SCOTT (4) It. < Form has fallen awav in last month or two but has had time to freshen and could show up. D. Gibbons 5 6492 GOOD SPORT (5) It. Useful showing off hard mark ’ at Claudelands on Tuesday. Better placed here and must have sound prospects. C. Holmes 6 0000 LOCAL SPARK (6) It. Form not good enough. No appeal. P. Harrison 7 0912 PARISIAN DUCHESS (7) It. Had first and second at Auckland Cup meeting and on that form must be given fine chance. C. Chandler 8 6000 GRANDBOROUGH (8) It. Latest form poor. No appeal. B. Running 9 0522 ARMBROSE FIRST (9) It. Shoyved good form at Hutt Park earlier in month. Is smart sprinter which should go well. C. Hunter 10 1157 RAYPHYL HANOVER (10) It. Disappointing in last two races but earlier form impressive. Cannot be ruled out. 11 7078 ADIOS JULIE (11) It. Latest form moderate. No appeal. J. Cooney 12 8070 RUSSLEY FORBES (12) It. Could not be seriously considered on latest efforts. L. Purdon 13 5439 BALIA'S BEST (13) It. Failed as trotter at Claudelands on Tuesday but previously shaped promisingly as pacer. Could surprise.
