Rest centres during the Gaines
For people who seek places to relax and meet other people during the Games, several drop-in centres have been set up in Christchurch.
These include the Y.M.C.A. centre in Hereford Street, the Open Door in Lichfield Street, the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church on Oxford Terrace at Madras Street, the lounge of the North Brighton Methodist Church in Bower Avenue, Aldersgate in Durham Street, and the Cambridge Terrace Methodist Mission. The Oxford Terrace centre is being run by the Scripture Union Movement in conjunction with the Oxford Terrace
Church and will provide entertainment from a pop group "Credo” on most evenings. The Bower Avenue centre, near Queen Elizabeth II Park, is run by the Christchurch branch of the United Nations Association, assisted by U.N.I.C.E.F. It is open from noon until 3 p.m. daily. Representatives of the U.N.A. and U.N.I.C.E.F. will be present. The Cambridge Terrace Mission Centre will provide meals and information about Christchurch. It will complement other services run by the mission during the period—a coffee and snack bar. and Drop In counselling centre. This rest centre will also run a film programme on New Zealand and trips to the Rehua Maori Apprentices Hostel, the only traditionally carved meeting house in the South Island.
