Records hammered

New Zealand, Australian and Scottish hammerthrowing records were all broken in the one event at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park yesterday. lan Chipchase (England), won the event with a New Zealand open record of 68.48 m (224 ft Sin). Howard Payne (England), who will be attempting to take his fourth successive gold medal in this event, was second, his best of 67.60 m (220 ft Ulin) also being inside the open record.

Third place went to Peter Farmer (Australia), who improved his own national mark with 67.40 m (221 ft LHn), and Christopher Black broke the Scottish record with 67.24 m (220 ft 7 Sin).

The two New Zealand representatives, Murray Cheater and Warwick Nicholk also left their mark on the contest. Cheater established a resident record of 66.16 m (217 ft Ojin). Nicholl’s best throw of 63.42 m (209 ft lin) heat his own Canterbury mark.
