Festival of Maori

Pressure of time has made it impossible to prepare programme notes for the threenight festival of Maori culture beginning in the Christchurch Town Hall tonight, a spokesman for the South Island Maori Council said yesterday. Instead, a compere will introduce each group and explain the background and significance of each item. Items are expected to include traditional action songs, which describe by hand movements the story of the song; the beautiful poi dances; and the haka, described as a “posture dance” where the males display their masculinity. There will also be some modern songs sung in English. Some of the performers will be taking part in the opening ceremony at the Commonwealth Games on January 24; others have been on 24-hour stand-by to welcome visitors at Christchurch Airport. Each group will perform its own selection of action songs and dances and each night will have a slightly different programme.
