Hard-court titles
(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI. The former Northland lefthander, K. O’Carroll who moved to Wellington late last year, excited a home town crowd on the opening day of the Winstone New Zealand hard-court tennis championships at Kamo yesterday. O’Carroll almost upset the fourth seed in the men's singles, J. Lloyd (Britain), in a secondround match. They traded serve for serve in the final set and Lloyd looked more vulnerable than O’Carroll until the eleventh game when O’Carroll missed two smashes and served two double faults. Lloyd won 3-6. 6-3. 7-5. All 24 of the overseas players won their opening singles I matches and Lloyd was the only lone fully extended. Results included:— MEN'S SINGLES First round: D. A. Parun (Wellington) beat B. ,T. Young (Northland), 6-1. 7-5; H. Fickentscheur (West Germany) beat P. Slako (Northland), 6-0. 6-1: G. Slater (North Shore) beat D. Hyndman (Northland), 6-1, 6-0; J. Lloyd (Britain) beat A. James (Wellington). 6-4. 7-5; M. Farrell (Britain) beat L. Hook (Northland), 6-1, 6-1; K. O’Carroll (Wellington) beat A. Cato Vickers (North Shore). 6-4, 6-3; S. Dochertv (United States) beat W. Williams (Northland), 6-4, 6-0. Second round: Llovd beat O’Carroll. 3-6, 6-3. 7-5; Farrell beat P. Becroft (Auckland), 6-1. 6-1. WOMEN'S SINGLES First round.—E.
