The stage had been set for an exciting finish at lunch when New Zealand led by 192 runs with 195 minutes play remaining. But New Zealand played out its second innings and left Australia to make 223 in 151 minutes for victory. At stumps, Australia had lost seven wickets for 118. New Zealand had a chance to break through for victory when Australia’s first six wickets fell for 65. but a 50-run partnership between G. Samuels (34) and A. Manzie (20 not out) steered the home side out of trouble. The left-hand spinner, B. Bhana. took the bowling honours with four wickets for 44 J Wiltshire top scored with 84 iii New Zealand’s second innings of 1/0.

Close bout—J. Clark (Britain) had a very narrow points decision over a tough Italian, S. Fabrizio, to retain his European bantam-weight boxing title over la rounds in London. Clark is a prime contender for a title fight against the world champion. R. Herera. of Mexico.
