HASTINGS, January 6.
Two Napier prisoners clearing land south of Hastings today turned Good Samaritans after the prison officer
supervising their work was knocked unconscious by a tree branch.
They gave 22-year-old Charles Hutchison immediate first aid and called an ambulance which took him to Hastings Hospital where the prison officer is reported to be in a comfortable condition.
Mr Hutchison, of Hastings, his fiancee. Miss Jackie i Brackenridge, and the two i prisoners were clearing land near Ocean Beach. 15 miles i south of Hastings, when a ! branch of a tree which apparently flew free struck him on the head. 1 After he had been taken i
to hospital with head injuries, Miss Brackenridge drove the two prisoners back to Napier Prison. The Napier Prison Superintendent, Mr G. P. McLean, said later he was unaware the two prisoners had been taken to Ocean Beach and added that he personally would not have authorised the trip. He had been asked whether arrangements made for the prisoners to work with Mr Hutchison at the beach were usual. “All I can say is that it is most unusual for a Superintendent not to. know what is going on,’’ Mr McLean said.
