Asbestos deposits being tunnelled
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 4. A mining consortium investigating asbestos deposits in the Red Hills region of West Otago has begun tunnelling.
A series of drives are to be made into the hillsides by a New Zealand contractor for the consortium—the Cassair Asbestos Corporation (Toronto), Kerfnicott Exploration (New York), and Nelson Lime and Marble, Ltd. The camp site has been shifted from the upper Red Pyke River to the upper Barrier Flats, on the south side of Little Red Hill.
Mr D. Badinski, a spokesman for the consortium, said in Queenstown today that the tunnelling did not represent any stepping up of the ex-
ploration programme, but a change in method. “We were hoping to bring bulldozers up to do the work that will now be done by tunnelling,’’ he said. “The country was proving too difficult for the bulldozers, and it would have taken them another six months to reach the site. "We wish to determine the economic viability of mineral deposits in the area as soon as possible. The decision to begin tunnelling was made in order that time would be saved,” said Mr Badinski.
