‘No fuel coupons’

(N.Z. Press Association) i January 4. The Minister of’ Energy Resources (Mr Freer) today emphatically denied that it was planned to introduce petrol rationing in February. Mr Freer said there was also no truth in a rumour that petrol-rationing cards, or books, were being printed. “No instructions whatsoever have been issued on petrol rationing,” he said. The Government had not advanced beyond the point of believing that petrol rationing might have to be considered if the situation became serious. It has been rumoured that the Government is staying its hand on petrol rationing until the departure of the Royal yacht Britannia in the second week of February. Mr Freer said that the Royal yacht would bunker with oil, not petrol. “CYLINDER BASIS” The rumour is that rationing for private vehicles will be based on the number of engine cylinders—one gallon a cylinder, a week . Mr Freer said that .he had no knowledge of any form of rationing having been decided on. “The suggestion of working on the number of cylinders is new to me.”
