Child shot in hand

(N.Z. Press * Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. A man who accidentally fired a bullet through his son’s hand pleaded guilty in the North Shore Magistrate’s Court today to a charge of careless use of a firearm. Sergeant F. T. Guy said Kerry Charles Hyde, aged 22, a married drug assistant, was showing his wife how to load a .22 rifle while his son was playing with the barrel. The bullet passed through the boy’s hand, requiring the amputation of one finger. Counsel, Mr S. C. Williams, said the rifle was fired while Hyde was pumping it, trying to eject a cartridge. Hyde was not a novice with firearms, and had used the rifle several times. Mr J. H. Murray, S.M., convicted Hyde, fined him $5O and ordered him to surrender the rifle to the police.
