Tempered pay rise
(X.Z.P..A.-Reuter —Copyright) ! MONTEVIDEO. Uruguayans have received a 33 per cent New Year pay rise decreed by the militarybacked Government of President Bordaberry. But the Government has also ordered substantial price increases for fuel (122 per cent), electricity (60 per cent), drinking water (42 per cent), and road and rail travel 1 (25 per cent). Food and consumer-goods j prices are also expected to be j raised shortly. Mr Moises Cohen, director of the Government Office of; Planning and Budgeting, said yesterday that inflation durin® January was expected to reach 18 per cent. According t" a recent speech by Presi-j dent Bordaberry. inflation was less than 80 per cent in 1973. and will be 70 per cent this year. Some Uruguayan economists, however, maintain that the 1973 rate was 90 per cent. The pay increase will raise I the average worker's salary i from about SNZBO a month! to SNZIO7. The minimum' wage has been increased from about SNZ47 to SNZ6O a month.
