Holiday visitors to Lyttelton
There is much interest for: holiday visitors at Lyttelton, apart from historical aspects. Oddly enough, overseas visitors, from Europe. Australia. Asia and America appear to express more enthusiasm than the average 1 antabnan. Only this week, a tourist coach full of Japanese showed much interest in the port An American family from < dorado made a brief excursion to Diamond Harbour and were enthralled. For visitors, harbour launch cruises are increasingly popular. Little known is the expert commentary given by launchma^tersj on historical aspects and their intelligent appraisal of shipping *n port. People who have* travelled on the Rhine, Marl-; borough Sounds, or the canals of Amsterdam, contend that this i recital is comparable to such; cruises. Laudchmasters have obviously j done their homework. Some data has a familiar ring. Visitors arriving at Diamond Harbour,; feel they have .stepped into' another world. Diamond Har-' hour residents share this viewj and would be lothe to leave. I Shipping in port is quiet at pre-! sent There are four overseas: vessels berthed. Three are; British, a rare occurrence nowa- i days, and nne Greek. The' China Navigation Company's? motor vessel Soochow • British) which recently rescued survivors: from the ill-fated 2J2-ton vessel: L'luilakeb? off Fiji is one. Berthed ahead of her at Cashin j Quay is the Blue Star Line’s! refrigerated cargo liner Hobart Star which has limited passenger' accommodation and is discharg-l ing North American Pacific Coast. lumber In the inner harbour; the Greek bulk carrier Delphic Miracle is discharging Christmas; Island phosphate ano the motor; vessel Forthbank, on her maiden ' voyage, is discharging soya bean meal from the Mexican Gulf. ; These vessels are worth a second look. At this time of the year, pleasure craft, both; local ’and from other ports, are’ in evidence Due toda\ are the; Norwegian tanker Herstein fromGeelong, the roll-on inter-island, \essel Holmlea and the Holmdale; from the Chathams. Another! interesting vessel in port today; will be the Frysna from Tonga with tropical cargo including bananas, plantains . and water! melons. Visitors must take care with youngsters on the waterfront. Shipboard visits are only per-! missible through ships’ agents or tn private invitation. Lyttelton' Harbour Board officials and all? waterfront workers welcome; people of all ages to the port ( and will be helpful and Infor-' math-e. but interest must be tempered with caution, in the' interests of safety. Lyttelton! takes great pride in its safety; record. ARRIVALS Rangatira (6.37 am.), 9387,! fapt. R. E. Pugh-Williams, Wellington (U.S.S.). Frvsna i 6.50 p.m.i. 298. Capt. Mo-ew Haukinima, Tonga (X.Z.
