New leader for N.Z. Salvation Army

AUCKLAND, January 3.
For the first time in its 109 years ol existence, a New Zealander heads the country’s Salvation Army. He is Commissioner E. R. Elliott, aged 68.
He has led the Salvation Army in New Zealand since November, 1972, with the rank of colonel, and was granted his new rank on January 1.
Commissioner Elliott.joined the Salvation Army in Dunedin as a cadet, and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1932. He commanded various corps before his appointment as a divisional commander at the early age of 39. In 1952, he became the first
New Zealander to go to the staff college in London.
From November, 1966, until October, 1969, he was divisional commander m Auckland. From then until 1972 he was chief secretary of the organisation in New Zealand. As commissioner, he will' join 40 other territorial commanders throughout the world in a meeting of the high council in London in May to choose a new world leader.
Commissioner Elliott succeeds Lieutenant-Commis-sioner H. W. Williams, who has been appointed commander of the Australian eastern • territory, based in Sydney.
