CITY BUS SERVICE
Views of drivers
That Christchurch buses would run on a reduced timetable today was not caused by obstinacy on the part of the tramway workers, who hoped the public would not be unduly inconvenienced, a spokesman for the Christchurch branch of the Tramway Workers’ Union (Mr A. J. Clyne) said yesterday. Because the bus drivers worked on a three-monthly roster system, they had been able to make holiday arrangements ahead, and in some cases change duties with men who did not mind the holiday work, Mr Clyne said. “We feel sure that the public will appreciate that we could not, in fairness to our drivers, ask them to cancel these arrangements to provide a normal service on January 2 at a fairly short notice,” Mr Clyne said. Services not normally run on the reduced timetable could have been covered if the Transport Board had given overtime to just enough drivers to work normal timetables for the usual “workers’ trips” only, he said.
