‘Fabrics to be scarce’

(N.Z. Press Association)

GISBORNE, Jan. 1. Fabrics such as cotton and polyester were expected to be scarce this year and the price could be doubled, said Mr G. Morris, fabric buyer and a director of Melbourne Cash, Ltd, today. A big supplier had recently received telephone advice from Japan of likely shortages and price increases, he said.

Polyester and synthetics had increased 40 per cent in price and production was down 30 per cent. The cotton position was worse.

Bad cotton crops had caused shortages, and polyester was affected by the oil situation. Replacement stocks could be as much as 50 per cent higher in price, said Mr Morris.

The shortages of materials would be reflected in the availability and cost of all manufactured clothing products, said Mr Morris.
