The American teen-age star, Miss C. Evert, failed to win the women’s singles, but her fiance, J. Connors, took the men’s singles title in the Australian open tennis championships in Melbourne yesterday. Connors, aged 22, jointly ranked No. 1 in America, beat the Sydney professional, P. Dent, in a tough, 140-minute match.
Connors, from Los Angeles, took the title in his first Australian appearance 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Miss Evert, aged 19, was earlier beaten, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0, by Miss E. Goolagong, of Australia, in the women’s singles final. The two women took 79 minutes to play the first two sets, but Miss Goolagong, aged 22, took only 18 minutes to clinch victory.
Miss Evert shook her head in bewilderment as Miss Goolagong conceded only 10 points in the third set.
It was the fourth successive Australian final victory for Miss Goolagong.
