Swimmers cautious

Swimmers at Christchurch beaches were particularly well-behaved yesterday, a point which was unanimously remarked upon by surf club patrolmen. There were no reports of anyone getting into difficulties. Most beaches attracted steady crowds throughout the day, the exception being Sumner with nothing more than “a sprinkling” of people on the beach and very few in the water. In almost all cases swimmers stayed within the flagged areas, although a strong easterly wind swept the beaches from South Brighton to Spencer Park and kept many from the water. At these beaches, however, there was a good surf, dumping occasionally from Waimairi Beach north. At Taylors Mistake there were many holes and a rip to the north of the flagged area, but no problems arose.
