Environment considered

f.V.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. “Southern Cross Minerals ■ Exploration. Ltd, is quite correct in its reported state- • ment that there will be a delay in processing its application for a prospecting warrant,” said the DirectorGeneral of Forests (Mr A .P. Thomson) replying to reported complaints by company officials. the area applied for is on the slopes of Mount Moehau in Coromandel Forest Park. It is thus essential that a full environmental impact report should be prepared before any decision is taken. “A report is all the more necessary because the cop-per-bearing ore is a lowgrade large-scale deposit. Therefore, any mining would be on a massive scale and could have major environmental implications. “I will be reporting to the Minister of Forests (Mr Moyle) on this matter soon, but I can assure Southern Cross Minerals that there has been no avoidable delay. “I do not consider that preparing an environmental impact report as important as this can correctly be described as 'dithering' as the company’s chairman is reported to have described Government action,” Mr Thompson said.
