Committee discusses timing of suspension
Under the Rules of Racing, a day’s racing ends at 10 p.m. — but it has been fairly common practice in the last few years for judicial committees to fix 5 p.m. as the end of a term of suspension on a jockey.
This situation is likely to be avoided in future. Racing club officials are now well aware of a farcical situation arising from the suspension last Saturday of the Rlccarton apprentice, L. J. Molloy, by the judicial committee of the Hororata Racing Club. Molloy was suspended until 5 p.m. next Saturday—but he will still be able to ride in four races, Including the feature events, at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting.
The Canterbury District Committee has powers to vary any penaltylmposed under the rules,
and yesterday considered the unusual aspects of Molloy’s situation, but decided to take no action.
“Molloy will be able to ride after 5 p.m. on Saturday,” said the secretary of the Canterbury District Committee (Mr W. R. Barberel) yesterday.
Mr Barberel said that the matter would almost certainly be discussed at the next meeting of the district committee, and clubs would be advised that the date only would suffice in fixing terms of suspension when it was deal that a day’s racing under the rules did not end until 10 p.m. To last evening, Molloy had two certain mounts, Montaiee and Show Keeper, in races at Wingatui. He was also hopeful of getting a ride in the James Hazlett Stakes, and at the same time ruefully reflected that h® had surrendered the mount on the smart three-year-old Mister Pompous. Before ha realised the possibilities open to him because of the late start to the Dunedin programme, Molloy advised Mister Pompous’s trainer, G. D. Lee, that he would not be available.
Lee then engaged G. W. Mein for Mister Pompous.
