More than 9600 Jehovah’s; Witnesses attended the! morning session of the; group’s convention in Christchurch yesterday. The attendance is expected to reach 11,000 as the programme progresses. Against a backdrop of steam from boiling mud and a geyser, the first speaker. Mr J. Coppie. emphasised the evils of smoking and other uses of tobacco. He said that the Bible permitted the use of alcoholic beverages in moderation but that no such approval could be found in favour of tobacco, betel nut. coca leaves, or for that matter marijuana, opium, or similar products. Mr G. M. Couch (New York) delivered the main address, on the theme oil victory over the world without armed conflict. He then announced the release of a • tract called “Kingdom News.” Every Witness in New Zealand will distribute 100 copies to the public in February. Tomorrow there will be a baptismal ceremony in the morning. The highlight of the convention will be a public address by Mr L. K. Greenless, who comes from the Witnesses’ world headquarters in New York. The address, “Surviving on the victorious side at Har-Maged-don,” will be delivered on Sunday at 3 p.m.
