AIRLINES’ PROBLEM
U.S. flights reduced
WZ. Press Assn —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 12. Fuel shortages in 1974 could well force United States airlines to cancel 1600 more flights, ground 275 jetliners, and dismiss more than 25,000 employees, according to Mr Paul Ignatius, president of the American Air Transport Association.
Airline presidents are meeting today to assess the impact of the 25 per cent fuel reduction ordered bv the Government, the first phase of which has forced the airlines to cut 1000 flights. According to Mr Ignatius, unless the fuel allocation is changed the airlines will be forced to cancel more than 950,000 departures at 500 airports early next year, ground at least 275 aircraft, and discharge or give leave to more than 25,000 employees.
The Government ordered a 10 per cent cut in jet fuel from November 1; a second, 5 per cent, cut went into effect on December 5: and a third. 10 per cent, reduction will apply on January 10.
