Saving petrol
Sir,—After reading letters in this column, on fuel consumption, it surprises me that no-one has suggested closing the T.A.8., or stopping horse racing. Surely more fuel would be saved if punters didn’t travel, in some cases hundreds of miles, to attend meetings. It also surprises me, that the Government has announced it has taken no steps for petrol rationing. Surely if petrol was rationed the motorist would plan his driving to get best value for his voucher, and the Government would still have control over fuel consumption. It appears to me that private industries, motor sports, and aviation are prepared to meet their responsibilities and take more meaningful and positive steps than Sir Basil Arthur to conserve jretrol. To reduce speed limits only slows the flow of traffic, causes congestion and so higher consumption of fuel. I think it is about time this Government faces
its responsibility, does something positive; and soon.— Yours, etc., D. J. COULTER. December 12, 1973.
