Club ‘promised’ dumped goods

Four truck-loads of goods dumped after the Games 5000 auction had been promised to the North Beach Surf Club for a Paddy’s market, it, and the New Brighton Lions Club are organising, says a surf club official.

The publicity officer for the surf club (Mr P. C. Stuart) said that more than half the goods given by the public to raise money for the Commonwealth Games, were “good, saleable items.” One of the auction organ-

isers, Mr G. D. Lawes, said yesterday that only about half a truck-load of the material had not been sold. ORGANISER’S OFFER Mr Stuart said that he spoke to Mr L. Buck, who was described on advertising posters as one of the organisers, on the Monday or Tuesday after the auction, and was told that if he would shift the property he could have it. “I went to look at it on Wednesday, and spoke to one of two blokes cleaning up, and they told us that if we got there on Saturday morning at 9 o’clock we could! have the lot. ; "We arranged trucks and: i trailers and got together 15; ior so helpers, but when we; jwent along on Saturdayimorning we found the place: ! was empty. We were told the! !goods had been carted away: ion Thursday. ! "Later, I spoke to Mr Buck, who said the goods had been i taken without his knowledge |or consent.” STOVES AND CHAIRS Mr Stuart said that he spent 15 to 20 minutes looking at the goods, and conservatively estimated that they would have realised $2OO to $250. Among the i items were at least half a Mozen stoves, chairs “by the I hundreds,” and a few baths, -all of which, he said, looked I in good condition. “There was even a china (cabinet in extremely good i condition.” The Paddy’s market for I which Mr Stuart wanted the goods will be a joint effort between the surf club and i Lions, in exchange for which 'the Lions will sponsor surf 'club equipment.
