Ethiopian famine
Sir,—lt has been reported that New Zealand supported a United Nations resolution to inquire into alleged Portuguese atrocities in Mozambique. This is reasonable but let us not adopt double moral standards. Surely urgent action should be taken by the United Nations to investigate why the regime of Haile Selassie remained so completely indifferent to the plight of untold thousands of its own people. If Mr Kirk is Sincere in his moralistic approach to world problems I suggest he seek support from other countries, World Council of Churches, trade unions, vocal minority groups, the world’s press, etc., to call for a United Nations investigation into the tragedy in Ethiopia. It has been most noticeable that few if any of the aforementioned have so far made any criticism of the Ethiopian regime for its lack of action in dealing with a factual situation and yet all quickly condemned Portugal on unconfirmed reports.— Yours, etc., FIAT LUX. November 13, 1973.
