Rubbish disposal

Sir,—Brilliant! Just about the time the world is running short of plastics, the City Council decides to wrap it around our rubbish and bury it. The council should send someone overseas to see what a disastrous idea plastic-wrapped garbage has proved to be.—Yours, etc., J. BLIGHT. November 12, 1973.

Sir,—The council has decided to put our rubbish into (compulsory?) plastic bags. What are they going to do with it then? Rubbish in plastic bags cannot be used for landfill as the mass of rubbish remains unstable for years with the gas and liquids from decomposing wastes trapped in plastic bubbles underground. The fact that plastic bags are being used overseas doesn’t mean that they will work in the long run, overseas or in Christchurch.—Yours, etc., lAN ORCHARD. November 12. 1973.
