National student president
A law student at the University of Canterbury, Mr J. Crichton, has been elected president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, which has more than 36,000 members.
Mr Crichton, who was president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association in 1972, is the fourth president of the national association to come from the University of Canterbury in the last five years. A former student at Bumside High School, Mr Crichton has a degree in political science from the University of Canterbury. He will take
up his new post in January next year. Mr Crichton said last evening that he advocated an investigation of the possibility of forming a national union of all tertiary students. Such an organisation would, have a membership of more than 80,000. “Young people have a responsibility to act together as an informed pressure group for the good of the whole community. This type of thing must be one of the facets of the work of the N.Z.U.5.A.,” he said.
