Youth work course is planned

A practical course in youth and community work will be offered at the Christchurch Technical Institute for the first time next year. It will be the only course of its kind in New Zealand and the only fully professional one..

The head of the Technical Institute’s department of general studies (Mr C. R. Hockley) said that it was likely that there would be courses each term for beginners and for those who had completed the six-week pilot course, which ended last evening. The success of the pilot course was shown by the high attendance, Mr Hockley said. Of the 30 applicants selected for the course, 28 attended each week. The course was set up after a survey of existing youth and community training courses by the youth activities officer of the Department of Interna] Affairs (Mr R. A. Ross). The survey showed

that there was a clear need for such a course. Lecturers included the chief social worker with the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr M. McGregor), the City Council’s community welfare worker (Mr J. R. L. Fry), and other community workers and youth leaders. The fee was $B.
