England batting fails, W.I. well placed

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The West Indies were well placed for their first victory in three years and a half, in the first cricket test against England at the Oval on Saturday.

The touring team was 95 for three at the close of the third day’s play —253 runs ahead and seven wickets standing. A commanding first innings lead of 158 was gained by the dismissal of England for 257, the last five wickets falling for only 10 runs as K. Boyce (five for 70) and G. S. Sobers (three for 27) ripped through the tail. G. Boycott, 55 not out overnight when England was 117 for two, went on to make 97, including one six and 13 fours, in 245 minutes. But apart from Boycott, only the South African-born A. W. Greig (38) and the captain, R. Illingworth (27), defied the rampaging West Indies attack with a sixthwicket partnership of 62. When the West Indies batted again, R. C. Fredericks

and R. B. Kanhai both fell before tea, and C. H. Lloyd, a century-maker in the first innings, followed 13 runs later. But R. G. Headley and A. I. Kallicharran prevented a further break-through, Headley being 40 not out at the close. WEST INDIES First innings R. C. Fredericks lbw b Arnold .35 R. G.
