Johannesburg drivers

Sir, —A South African who lived in Johannesburg for over 10 years appreciates the need for investigation into the road toll there. True, Johannesburg drivers are aggressive, impatient and incredibly discourteous. White supremacy, with all its ingrained selfishness and arrogance, shines through in the behaviour of the Johannesburg motorist. It is not uncommon to see the white swerve to avoid an animal but aim straight at a black pedestrian laughing to see her, with bundle on head, leap aside in terror. The Automobile Association spokesman speaks of the “special problem of unsophisticated Africans who regard being hit as a visitation from the gods.” Apparently, Africans were not asked for their ideas on the reasons for the high death rate. In his fight for recognition as a human being, the African often feels that the accelerator pedal is the only thing over which he has any control. This does not engender the makings of a cautious driver either.— Yours, etc., SHONA E. GOOD. June 12, 1973.
