Brighton’s new signing
The strength of the New Brighton soccer club has been con'siderably increased in the last week or so. The major signing is a 17-year-old apprentice professional. Tony Cahill, from the I English first division club, CovenI try City. A 6ft, 13st central defender, Cahill, an England youth international, arrived in Christchurch late last week, shortly after re- ■ turning from Switzerland with I the Coventry youth team. He was recommended to New ■Brighton by the club’s adviser in the English Midlands. Mr A. 'Walton, who is a scout with Coventry City. “We made the arrangements quickly once we heard that Tony was available as several English league clubs were after him,” the Brighton coach. I new signings in its reserve team on Saturday, Graham Waller and Alan McCaul, both strikers and both recent Immigrants from Britain. Another new signing is the former Gisborne City goalkeeper. Peter Short, who is now studying at Lincoln College. Short impressed when he played for Gisborne against Christchurch United when the two clubs met in a Chatham Cup match at English Park last season.
United also had a new signing in its reserve team on Saturday. He was John Myles, who played for the London senior club. Wimbledon, and has moved to Christchurch from Wellington where he was with the national league club. Diamond United . Myles scored twice when United reserves beat the Southern League side, Western, 3-1, in a friendly game on Saturday.
