Instrumental concert
The Christchurch School of Instrumental Music had another demonstration concert in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre on Sunday afternoon.
Wind Orchestra C, conducted by William Shaw, began proceedings with four little pieces, and showed praiseworthy concentration in handling sophisticated instruments such as flutes, horns, trombones, and clarinets.
The Vincent d’lndy Trio, Mark Walton (clarinet), Veronica Buckley (’cello), and John Williams (piano), played the first movement of an overture by d’lndy with good appreciation of its
lethargic character. Rhythmic movement was maintained and, although it was kept at a soft level there was always interestingly varied expression. The choice of timbres showed thoughtful preparation. Orchestra 3, conducted by Frank Dennis, played an arrangement by Woodhouse of the Finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 with commendable precision, tone and spirit. RimskyKorsakov’s “Song of India” needed better balance between solo parts and what was accompanimental. Softer and more mysterious tonal effects would have added interest.
With Martin Lamb as solo pianist the orchestra gave a lively and attractive performance of a Rondo by Field arranged by Bency. Attention by a tuner to the piano would be helpful. Orchestra No. 8, conducted by Keith Morgen showed promise of improvement if they work very hard and listen to make sure they are in tune. Orchestra No. 7, conducted also by Mr Morgan, played Czech and Russian folk tunes with good cohesion and, at times, pleasing tone. The Solomon Sextet, Mark Walton (clarinet), Jennifer Goldstein (violin), Catherine Mountfort (violin), Vivienne Mountier (viola), Judith Williams (’cello), and Jason Bates (piano), played an Overture on Yiddish Themes by Prokofiev. This was charming music played with sensitivity and with disciplined technique. Balance was good and tonal colourings were always appropriate. The soft and most expressive playing was delightful and the rhythm was always vital. —C.F.B.
