Chapel readied
Work on the Pacific Chapel in the Christchurch Cathedral is nearly completed. The only major job still to be done is the laying of the floor mosaic.
The chapel, in the North I Porch, commemorates the work of the province in the Pacific Islands. It will be dedicated early in September at a time when the Bishops of Polynesia and Melanesia, the Rt Revs J. T. Holland and J. W. Chisholm, will be in Christchurch. The mosaic has yet to be drawn up. It will show the Pacific basin, including Australia and New Zealand, and will be made in Christchurch. It will be on the main floor of the Cathedral, just outside the entrance to the chapel, and will measure about 12ft square. The two side walls of the chapel have been cut back to make room for an altar and seat, both set in the walls. Glass doors have replaced the original wooden doors, which have been moved to the outside entrance of the porch. The interior stone has been cleaned, beams and woodwork revarnished and
! the roof painted in medieval colours and style. Stained glass will event- • ually replace the panes in the windows.
