American in chess lead
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) LENINGRAD. R. Byrne (United States) yesterday took the lead after the eighth round of the Leningrad chess tournament. Byrne beat Tukmakov (Russia) while the overnight leader, B. Larsen (Denmark) lost to V. Korchnoi (Russia). The American leads with 6.5 points. Korchnoi (one game adjourned) is in second place with six. Larsen (one adjourned) shares third place with A. Karpov (Russia), who missed one game, with 5.5.
