From stud and stable STRADBROKE WINNER’S DAM BRED IN CANTERBURY
The success story of Lucky Cloud, surprise winner of the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane last Saturday, holds much of interest for South Islanders. He is the fourth foal of the Lucky Bag mare. Kalinita, which was bred in Canterbury by the late Mr L. W. Storry, and did much of her racing in the colours of Mr I). Mclnnes, of Southbridge.
Kalinita was not topflight racing material, and Mr Mclnnes looked to the West Coast circuits to put his mare on the path to success—and to fairly good purpose, too. Kalinita won her first race at Westport, and later that season, on March 14, 1959, supplied one of the features of the opening day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting by winning two hack sprints. Each time she was ridden by E. B. Skelton, who was quickly forced out of flat riding because of his weight. Each time, also, sne was run close by Tickled Pink, also by Lucky Bag. On the second day of tnat Greymouth meeting, Kalinita won another 7f hack sprint under 9.4 but when raced later in the day under 9.11 she ran unplaced. In her five-year-old racing next season, Kalinita won twice, once at Reefton. and later at Hokitika, in the colours of the Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, who has for many years been one of Canterbury's strongest supporters of West Coast meetings. Kalinita resumed in the Mclnnes colours as a six-year-old but did not manage to win again that season, nor in lighter programmes of racing at seven and eight years. Kalinita’s dam, Tupatiu,
was got by Ruthless from, Lady Zephyr, by Robespierre' from Lady Minerva, by Mar-' tian from Lady Lilian, by Phaeton from Lady Zetland.l Difficult double Lady Zetland was the first to win the Great Easter and] Great Autumn Handicaps at; one meeting. She also won'
i the New Zealand Cup and] ; the Canterbury Cup. Lady Lilian was a daughter •J of Lady Zetland which also . | carried off the Great Easter'Great Autumn double. Lady Lilian had weightcarrying ability as well as ij versatile qualities, and went 11 out of racing with a highly creditable record. 'I Lucky Cloud was bought
as a yearling at the Waikato sales in 1969 for $lBOO by Messrs S. and K. Lindsay, sons of the Balcarres (Matamata) studmaster. Mr J. H Lindsay, but when the bills for an unusual heart count came in they decided to pass him on at the same price to Mrs H. G. Quilty, of Brisbane. Mrs Quilty placed Lucky Cloud in the care of N. Higgins, at Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. Lucky Cloud's win in the Stradbroke has written an important chapter into a notable success story for the season of the stallion, Hasty Cloud. Kiwi Can and last Saturday's Cornwall Handicap! winner, Hasty Queen, have also added some of the brighter chapters to the record of their sire. Now that it has been established that his progeny do better when given plenty of time, the outlook for next season might be even brighter. The Auckland jockey, D. A. Peake, is well fitted to comment on the ability and potential of the stock of Hasty Cloud. Peake won the Cornwall Handicap on Hasty Queen, and was on Kiwi Can in some of his more notable wins including the Thompson Handicap last autumn. “Most of them need a bit of time to strengthen,” Peake told “The Press” at Riccarton on Monday. “Some of them were a bit weak as youngsters, but came right with a bit of time. We might not have seen the best of them yet.” Bred in Ireland Hasty Cloud was bred in I Ireland in 1958, from a ! mating of Preciptic with ; Cloudette, a daughter of I Niccolo Dell’Arca. I Chute, the fifth dam of ‘ Hasty Cloud, was by the old champion, Carbine.
