Equal pay sought for women hairdressers
WELLINGTON The Arbitration Court was yesterday asked to introduce full equal pay for women working in women’s hairdressing salons. The claim affects thousands of women in hairdressing salons throughout New Zealand. except in the area defined as the North Auckland land district. The claim, which was rejected by employers during conciliation talks in March, is the first to be taken to the Arbitration Court under the Equal Pay Act. A substantial increase is also being sought lor men working in women’s salons. If the claim is granted in full, experienced men and women in women’s hairdressing salons will earn a minimum of $72 weekly. The present weekly rate for men working in such salons is $52.80; the weekly fate for women is $36.60. Women working in men’s hairdressing salons receive equal pay. Mr B. Alderdice, represent-
ing the Shop Employees’ As jsociation. said; “The claim of .equality is endorsed by the employers in principle. How ever, they take a long-term view; it is up to them to prove why their long term i* necessary.” The employers’ association also asked the Court to have women's salons closed on Saturdays
