Redundancy at Te Anau

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A misunderstanding had led men working on the Te Anau control gate construction to claim that the Government was making them redundant, the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) said on Thursday. Redundancy notices have been served some men on the Te Anau project. They understood work would be available for them at the Mararoa dam site, another part of the Manapouri project. At a meeting at Manapouri workers criticised the Government for not considering the men’s livelihood when they decided not to proceed with the Manapouri project. Mr Watt said on the television programme “Gallery” that the Mararoa job would not require as many men as the original major project. But the men at Te Anau had been employed by the contractor, not by the Ministry of Works.

Asked if the Ministry of Works had given the men an undertaking that work would be available for them at Mararoa, Mr Watt said not as far as he was concerned. But he added that he would do everything as Minister of Labour for those men who could not find another job.
