Early Sumner

Commenting on the article on early Summer, printed on May 19, W. J. A. Brittenden suggests that the author confused Captain George Day with his son, the pilot, Joseph Day. It was W. H. Turner, not George Day, who took over the signal station on the Cave Rock on its establishment. Joseph Day became signalman in 1867 and he preceded, not succeeded, Captain Hines (not Hynes), as skipper of the lifeboat.

Mr Brittenden also says that the Cafe Continental was not entirely wooden. It had brick walls. The first floor supports were of concrete, and he recalls reading that steel girders were found among the debris after the fire.
