A time to renew
Renewals of driving licences in Christchurch have! speeded up after an initial; alack period, the latest figures ■ available yesterday showed: that, with three of the eight! weeks gone, almost 4000! licences had been renewed. ■ Mr H. Turner, chief clerk' of the licensing department; of the Mimstery of Transport,! said that this left 26,000 to| be renewed, most of which would probably come in the last week rush.
He appealed to the public to get in early and avoid time wasting and confusion.
“They just fade away”
By Thursday, more than a third of the 3000 over-70 licences had been renewed. Asked if many of the older drivers failed their test, Mr Turner said that they tended to realise when they had lost! the co-ordination needed to drive, and they decided not; to come for a test. “Like old soldiers, they just fade away.”
This decision was often a relief to worried relatives, Mr Turner said, particularly because many drivers in their eighties drove powerful modern cars.
