Supreme Court BURGLARY CHARGE

Six months detention

Bruce Alfred O’Keefe, aged 41, a maintenance fitter, was sentenced to six months periodic detention by Mr Justice Macarthur in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of burglary of a house in Austin Street, Waltham. O’Keefe was also ordered to make restitution of $lO5 for the transistor radios which were stolen, and was put on probation for 18 months.

Mr I. J. D. Hall, for O’Keefe, said that he had a long list of convictions but the last one for dishonesty; was in 1966. In the intervening period of six years and a half, his only offences had been connected with overindulgence in alcohol. The burglary had occurred while O’Keefe was under the influence of alcohol.

"Having regard to your list: of previous offences, at first! sight I do not think it can be' doubted that this case would be one calling for a sentence of imprisonment,” said his Honour. “But I am impressed by the fact that you have kept out of serious trouble for well over six years, and by what the probation officer says regarding your marriage last year and the way it appears to have steadied you up.”
