Jesson wins cycling
The experienced R. J. Weir (Papanui), and the new senior, P. A. Jesson (Avon), were successful cyclists in open cycling races on the week-end. On Saturday, Jesson won the A grade of the series of criteriums held by Avon in Harris Crescent by a convinc- 1 ing margin from D. L. Hub-j bard and A. D. Morris. Yesterday morning, Weir was a clear winner of the mountain time trial held by Papanui round the Summit Road. Jesson’s criterium win came as the result of his very consistent sprinting in a very fast race. The 30 laps of the block came to a distance of 24 miles, and the time was under 58min. One rider expected to be a leading contender, C. J. Tabak. had to change a wheel early in the race and lost all chance. Apart from the placegetters, the only riders still in the main bunch were Weir, M. W. Litolff, J. J. Sullivan and R, E. Knight. Three Papanui riders finished alone, and in the first three places, in the B grade, but the Sword brothers had bad luck. G. p. Sword, who has been well-piaced in early sprints, crashed, and his older brother, G. R. Sword, broke his forks. C. A. P Deller broke awav and this gave him sufficient points to ’in narrowly from G. J. Day *nd D. R. Johnson.
The youngest of the three brothers riding, L. A. Sword, won the C grade from C. Haagen and S. P. White, in the only race where all the riders kept together for most of the race. R. Thomson was the winner of the small D grade race. Weir’s time in the mountain time trial was 34min 17sec. only 11 sec slower than A. D. Morris s winning time last year. Morns ’ this year was third, but both he and J. H. J. Chesmar were a I minute slower than Weir. | Sullivan punctured but still j managed the creditable time of i4omin lOsec.
