‘YEARS BACK' REUNION
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON.
The National Film Unit’s television series, “The Years Back,” has sparked off a reunion in Wellington. In episode eight, "Making Do,” some young British evacuees in New Zealand gathered in 1941 to broadcast Christmas messages to their families in England. One of the youngsters of the film was Rosemary Ash (now married and living in Lower Hutt) who was evacuated from Bournemouth in 1940.
A Miss W. Long, of Raumati Beach was an escort on the ship that brought Rosemary and other children from Britain to New Zealand under a child migration scheme.
Rosemary stayed here for five years from 1940 and returned from England again in 1949.
Remembering her, after seeing the television programme, Miss Long contacted the show’s producer, Mr David Fowler, who arranged her reunion with Rosemary.
Mr Fowler said he had had a tremendous amount of correspondence since the series started. Many had asked if he knew where different people were living now.
